Chapter 30

That evening is almost a rerun of the night before: we sit around on a big pile of cushions and eat way too much cake. Once again Mitch is missing. We told her that we could all hang out on the beach, but she said (pointedly) that she’d rather stay on the Alisha with a bunch of smelly orangutans.

The fairies chatter away, describing how they turned this once-deserted island into their home.

“We made the staircase all on our own,” says Moss proudly. “And the platforms and all the slides and swings.”

“I did most of them,” says Twig, wriggling his magical fingers in the air.

“No you did NOT!” says Moss. “Anyway, shut up, Twig. We’re not allowed to talk about our magic!”

“Really?” I say, because suddenly I’m desperate to know what Moss’s magical power could be. “I mean, we already know what Owl and Twig can do because we’ve seen them do it. Can’t you give us a hint, Moss? Or a demonstration?”

Moss giggles. Her teeth glitter in the light of the setting sun. “OK . . . Guess what? You’ve already seen me do it!”

Her revelation leads to me, Rose, and Win trying to guess what it is that she can do.

“Excellent cake-making?” suggests Rose.

“Fast running?” I say.

“Extreme bossiness?” says Win bravely.

“No, no, and no!” cries Moss, delighted. “You don’t know and I’m never, ever going to tell you!”

Twig and Owl refuse to give us any more clues, so in the end we give up and Win demonstrates his magic instead.

“I’ve not got one magical skill,” he says, getting out his wand and giving it a swish through the air. “I’ve got, like, a million.” Then he bellows, “Whistle fur!” and marshmallows scatter across the balcony.

It’s fair to say Win’s spell blows the fairies’ minds.

“What is this stuff?” says Owl, shoving four marshmallows into his mouth at once. “You’ve got to make us hundreds before you go!”

And so Win does make more . . . and more . . . and more . . . until the platform is overflowing with marshmallows. We stuff as many as we can into jars for the fairies, then eat the leftovers. We’re having so much fun that it gets dark without us realizing it.

The next time I glance into the jungle I see that we’re surrounded by dark trees. Insects and birds call out from the shadows and I can hear strange rustling sounds. That’s when I start to think about the ghost. No. That’s not true. That’s when I start to think about Crowky.

When I notice Rose yawning, I whisper, “Maybe we should go and sleep on the Alisha?”

“NO!” cry the fairies in unison. Their hearing must be as good as their running.

Moss darts over and grabs my hand. “You promised you’d sleep here tonight,” she says. “You’re the only visitors we’ve ever had and you’re going tomorrow!”

I’m learning that it’s hard to say no to someone with enormous eyes.

“Please stay,” says Twig, taking my other hand.

“Yes, pleeeeease, Arthur!” adds Owl, and he wraps his arms tight around my legs.
